McAlister on working for McCain for free

Here’s what Bob McAlister had to say about this report on The Shot about cutbacks in the S.C. McCain campaign:

Quinn and I volunteered to continue working for Sen. McCain at breakneck speed without pay for a few months. We believe he can and will win and will make a tremendous president. In my case, this is what I intended to do all along. I told Lindsey Graham and Sen. McCain that I would support McCain with no thought of being paid (I don’t consider myself a political consultant). The pay thing came later. It may be that my current pay status more accurately reflects my overall worth to the campaign.

Is there any precedent for a candidate winning a major election (particularly a Presidential primary) when the majority of the campaign staff works without pay?

For another data point, Ron Paul is reporting $2.4 million in cash on hand from donations in the last quarter – which is more than McCain has on hand ($2 million). Guess Mr. Paul, as a true conservative with Libertarian leanings, is a better steward of the public’s funds as we would hope all politicians would be.
