Sanford in Sullivan’s Island

Tim Kelly just said there would be a press conference in Sullivan’s Island at 5, but he was off a bit. Sanford came out a few minutes ago and spoke to the press, according to a reporter I know who was there.

So the reports I’d heard were true; the gov did go down there to be with the family today.

Sanford said he’d been there since this morning, the kids are fine, and he’s not resigning. That’s about all I know.

My cousin is the doctor down there. I wonder if Mark has needed any attention to that big impression of the frying pan against his head

    ROTFL

I posted photos of that woman….Maria Belen Chapur on Facebook….

WIS says he’s come clean on the expenses for the trip last year –b/c he got caught, natch.

and I sincerely doubt the kids are fine now or will be for a very, very long time.

    Selfish jerk

It’s easy to laugh or to be outraged at this situation.

But that puts us in the same position as the man who once said, “He lied under a different oath, and that’s the oath to his wife” about another such scandal.

And when we screw up next, we become the hypocrites.

And since I’m human too, I’d rather not put myself in that position.

The Washington Post is reporting that Sanford’s security detail was actively trying to find him over the weekend but getting the runaround from his staff. I think that has to mean they knew enough not to ask where he was and to try to throw people off. And that is troubling.

Speaking of the staff, FYI, I’ve spent a lot of time today talking to friends and former staffers of the gov, and there’s pretty general agreement that nobody thought THIS guy would do something like this.

Neither did I. I thought a lot of pretty harsh things about him, but not this.

  7. KP

Maybe. I’ve worked for people with a lot less immediate responsibility than Mark Sanford, and not a one would have ever considered dropping off the radar screen for six days. And if they did, their press secretary would have had a heart attack. I guess it’s possible Sanford’s staff are just used to eccentricity.

Brad why don’t you do some investigating yourself? Like how this reporter for The State acted on a “hunch” to go to Atlanta to find the governor. Why would you go to Atlanta thinking he’ll get off the plane there, the governor flew out of the Columbia airport. Most people who fly return to the same airport they originally departed from… not an airport 4 hours away. How did she see him get off the plane… how did she get not only the regular airport security checkpoint, but also the international checkpoint? There are a lot of unanswered questions, and a lot of sudden “right place at the right time” in this whole story line. My money is someone was feeding her information. My gut feelings is that when this whole story unfolds, she’s going to look more like a chump than a champ.

Why are all the people screaming for Sanford to resign, not bringing up another governor’s affair. That of one Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton and Gennifer Flowers and let’s not forget Paula Jones.

  10. jfx

Bill C., are you drunk? ENGAGE BRAIN.

    1. The State already had the emails tying the guv to Argentina.

    2. Smith, along with everyone else, knew that Sanford was due back from…somewhere…with more than a few hours’ advance notice (plenty of time to follow a 2+2 hunch to Atlanta).

    3. The SLED car was located.

    4. They have this thing now called “the internet” that people can use to “check flight times and schedules”.

    5. All outbound human traffic is funneled out through the same airport commons waiting area. She simply had to stand there and wait for a tall, thin, brown-haired guy in rumpled slacks to come walking toward her. No security bypass, no special escort, no conspiracy.

Are you forgetting that Sanford was an everyman commoner on this voyage? He was just like you and me, with no security, no insulation, no bubble. If someone thought YOU were on a particular flight, would it be so hard to check, and spot you coming out?

We already know there’s a mole in the governor’s office, because of the emails. That’s the critical inside job, and it happened months ago. That’s the piece that made it so easy, several months later, to add it all up in a way that might make a thinking reporter go for a drive over to Atlanta, stand around, and see what happens.

    It ain’t rocket science. Journalism!

  11. Brad Warthen

FYI, it’s not generally believed that the e-mails came from the gov’s office. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen that way, it’s just not what I’m hearing.
I’ll tell you this much — I know that they came to the paper VIA e-mail, and from an unknown address that did not respond to inquiries. That was in December. I don’t know what the paper learned since then, because after that, they were in the hands of News (they originally came through the editorial department; I didn’t understand how that could have happened, since I didn’t remember them, but then I was told they came in, and were passed to news, the week I was on vacation…)

  12. Bill C.

I heard today that the e-mails were not from or to his state e-mail account. So this means someone hacked or illegally accessed his personal e-mail account. For those just joining us, think back to what happened to the kid who hacked Sarah Palin’s personal e-mail account… can you say “felony”? I heard from a good source tonight that “someone” has already started an initial investigation and that they already have “ideas” of who was behind it. Brad probably has heard the same thing and possibly more. Let’s just say the name I heard will not surprise anyone… and I hope to God it is true. Nothing is proven yet, but it’s not going to take an IT security genius to crack this case. If Sanford wants to take action, which I hope he does, I believe there will be some high profile SC government names in some serious trouble.

jfx – it’s not too difficult to have a “hunch” when you’re being tipped off… all they need to do is subpoena Smith for her cell phone records over the past week.

The information is starting to come together, it won’t be long before we hear how things came about and who was involved.

  13. jfx

I noticed Bill and Lee seem very upset that Sanford was caught.

You’d think they’d be upset because of what he actually did….y’know, because of the whole “morals” thing that Lee always evangelizes about.

But, no. They’re upset that he was caught, and they want the people who outed him to pay. Morals, schmorals.

  14. Bart

jfx, I don’t think either one is upset over Sanford getting caught, its just that the way it appears to have been handled is just as deceptive and has the potential of criminal activity as Sanford’s behavior in certain aspects of this soap opera. Sanford violated the trust of the people of this state, his party, and especially the trust of his family. Others involved in outing him may be in violation of the law by providing the emails and other information considered private.

If we are going to have a damn circus surrounding this fiasco, then let all the players enter the center ring and be recognized.

  15. Lee Muller

We need to find out how many other state officials and legislators have had their e-mails and personal documents stolen and passed to the opposition. This is no different than physical burglary, just like Watergate.

  16. Bart

I had a conversation with someone in the Detroit area and they are having a ball with our governor’s indiscretions and the entire soap opera. It goes to reinforce opinions of South Carolinians in other parts of the country. Now, they have someone they can point a finger at and feel a little superior. It is a good thing we can help others feel better about themselves.

  17. Lee Muller

Yeah, Detroit, where the mayor is going to jail, Mrs. Conyers just plead guilty to bribery. Detroit is the archetype result of Democrat policies.

  18. Randy E

Now Sanford is citing the bible to justify staying in office and he told his staff “the governments business must continue.” He didn’t seem to care about his Christian values nor the “government’s business” when he fled to Argentina for a bootie call.

The interview Mrs. Sanford gave shows that his trip to Argentina was a totally new betrayal. He had promised to end the affair.

  19. Lee Muller

Whether Mark Sanford show continue in his job as Governor is solely a matter between he and Mrs. Sanford.

  20. Ralph Hightower

Jenny said that, paraphrased, she doesn’t give a rat’s ass about SC Governot Mark Sanford political career. She is concerned about raising her boys. Something that SC Governot Mark Sanford apparently doesn’t give a rat’s ass about.

  21. Lee Muller

I don’t recall you Democrats wanting Clinton to resign for his molesting an intern, paying her hush money with a $90,000 job, and threatening witnesses. Even after he copped a plea bargain on perjury charges, the Democrats were defending him as a poor victim.

When did you folks get morality?
