Occupy Columbia says “Haley lies”

This just came out a few minutes ago:

VIDEO: Gov. Haley lies about inviting Occupy Columbia to make a public statement

The video above shows Governor Nikki Haley falsely claiming that Occupy Columbia had been invited to make a public statement at a Budget and Control Board meeting, in which they proposed new regulations aimed at evicting Occupy Columbia. We are still waiting on the invitation.

In reality, Melissa Harmon called the Budget and Control Board yesterday and requested to make a public statement. I know this because I was sitting next to her when it happened and tweeted about it. When they did reply to her, she was told explicitly that we could not make public statements and instead would have to submit written ones. We did not choose to submit written statements, as the Governor stated.

Maybe the Governor should check with her staff about these things before speaking to the media. If she did intend for us to have that opportunity then she should consider slowing this down and allowing adequate time to hold public hearings.

I’m shocked, shocked, that our governor is running rough-shod over transparency and giving the People a chance to be heard.

I suggest the Occupiers consider pulling up stakes and heading to the Governor’s mansion!

What is truly peculiar is that Haley lies even when saying nothing at all would do just as well, and even when she can easily be refuted. Like many others, I’ve wondered if there is some clinical pathology involved. In classical southern terms, there is something not quite right about her, bless her heart.

Haley, a smart and a quick problem-solver, has caught on to the tactic of baseless, relentless attacks.

Some of you may recall from your own law school days the potential hazard
faced by prosecutors dwelling on minutiae — alienation of jurors.

My advice to you? Forget the law school wisdom and keep up the pettiness. Voters will remember!

So far, the Occupy movement has at least been a gadfly to Nikki Haley, giving her rope to hang herself.

Despite my opinion of the Occupiers, it’s also clear that Haley has not handled the situation very well.

This one fascinated me enough to take away from my time to do a little further study on it.

I won’t defend Haley nor will I defend the Occupiers either. What I will do is question this incomplete story for accuracy and truth. For the Haley critics, she will never be able to do anything to appease them until she leaves office and is never heard from again. For her supporters, they hope she serves a second term as governor and goes on to higher office.

This is the transcript of the 8 seconds.

“…we did offer for them to have a public statement today and what they did, they chose to have a public statement in writing that all the members received…”

If you are an Occupier supporter, then the 8 second statement will be interpreted this way.

“…we (the board) did offer for them to have a public statement today (Occupiers “addressing” the board in person) and what they did, they (the board) chose to have a public statement in writing that all the members received…”
According to the report…” When they did reply to her, she was told explicitly that we could not make public statements and instead would have to submit written ones. We did not choose to submit written statements, as the Governor stated….”
Read Haley’s comment again. Did she indicate the public statement was to be in person? No, she never said that at all. According to the Tweet, the Occupiers asked to address the board but were told it would have to be in writing. The comment can be interpreted this way if you are not loath to find anything to use to attack Haley.

“…we (the board) did offer for them (Occupiers) to have a public statement today and what they did (the board), they (the board) chose to have a public statement in writing that all the members received…”

Since we don’t have the benefit of more than an 8 second sound bite to go by and do not have the benefit of the question asked by a reporter, then we don’t know in what context the answer was given.

    Now, where is the lie?

Any good reporter and any good attorney knows this is crap and without any backup to substantiate the accusation of Haley lying, it is just another example of political opportunism by extracting one part of a statement that can be manipulated into something to support your point or cause.

Sorry for the lack of spacing and separation of the paragraphs. When I typed it up, they were there. When it was posted, they were not. Wish we had an edit feature we could use after posting.

It would certainly be helpful to have more than those few seconds. You even miss the beginning of the statement. Reminds me of this video, when I was too stupid to start rolling before asking my subject the question, and almost missed the first word of her reply. (Actually, now that I go back and look at it, it wasn’t as bad as I remembered.)

And there’s no question that context matters. Speaking of McCain videos, there’s this one, then there’s this more complete one. Very different.

And you base your opinion on results of stellar performance of which other state’s Republican governor confronting OWS?

Apparently our legislature got off its rump and has banned “occupations” of State House grounds. Exercising the will of the people is progress.

If a sympathetic federal judge (LAWYER) now overturns the legislature, that will hurt Vincent “Just Another Lawyer” Sheheen’s chances next time.

As long as voters keep themselves ignorant we will continue to have cheating, lying, ineffective, unprincipled, self-aggrandizing, pompous ass politicians. It’s a shame but reality.

“Nothing like solving problems quickly by ignoring them or lying about them…”

Except in this case, if you ignore them they’ll eventually go away… and maybe come back with something to actually protest about. They’ve been there for three months, have they come up with one demand other than “world peace”?

  11. `Kathryn Fenner

Because we do not want judges to have any training in the law when deciding how to apply it, of course.

Steven Davis, have you not been paying attention to the Wal-Mart debate? They’re all over it. They publicized it before the media even broke it I believe. They marched to city hall about it. They cleaned up the creek at Olympia park next to the site. Passed out literature before the public meeting at 701 Whaley and some spoke at the meeting. Just one example. I can give you more demands if that’s not enough.
