This is pretty cool — a picture of old and new cast members sitting around preparing for shooting to begin in a couple of weeks on the new “Star Wars.”

Check this out:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

I wonder what character Max von Sydow will play — the ghost of Obiwan Kenobi, perhaps?

I guess that’s the back of his head, talking to Mark Hamill over on the left. There’s Harrison Ford on the opposite side of the circle, in front of R2D2. Is that Carrie Fisher two over to the right of him?

Aside from von Sydow, I don’t know the new cast members. But then, I didn’t know who Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill were, before the original film. Carrie Fisher I remembered from “Shampoo.” Who could forget?

Favorite Max von Sydow role — the assassin in “Three Days of the Condor.” Favorite scene — in the elevator. After some punks hit all the buttons on the panel before getting off, laughing hysterically, he just looks at his intended victim and says, “Kids…” Like, whaddya gonna do?

Confession — sometimes, when I get on an elevator, I find myself half-consciously setting my face in an expression like von Sydow’s. Amused. Detached. Polite. Deadly.

Especially if I’m wearing a trenchcoat.

Andy Serkis was Gollum in LOTR and The Hobbit movies. Other than Serkis and von Sydow I don’t know the new people either.
I hope to goodness these are better written than the prequel trilogies.
Also they could get Ewan MacGregor in old makeup to be the ghost of Kenobi. He was the best thing about the prequels.

That whole Midichlorian thing in the Phantom Menace just ruined the Force. It was a mystical, magical thing and they turned it into a stupid virus. And Queen Amidala was a pedophile. And Anakin turned into Darth Vader because he was tired of being called “Annie.” (yes I know they didn’t spell it that way, but still) And they killed Darth Maul way too soon. And they had Jar Jar instead of a Han Solo type character.

          And Greedo shot first, dammit!
