Suarez takes public apology genre to new depths

Speaking of having a way with words…

Just so you know that politicians have no patent on the use evasive language in public apologies, you’ve got to check out this one from footballer Luis Suárez:


Somewhere, Mark Sanford and Bill Clinton are envious. And Ronald Reagan’s “mistakes were made” just seems amateurish compared to the towering passivity of “suffered the physical result of a bite.” That’s just poetry by comparison…

    For those of you who are curious as to whether there’s just something about being a Spanish speaker that leads to such eloquence, here’s that phrase in the original:

    “lo cierto es que mi compañero de profesión Giorgio Chiellini sufrió en el lance que tuvo conmigo los efectos físicos de un mordisco”

    Among other things, “mi compañero de profesión” has a warmth to it that the English “my colleague” just lacks…
