Doug’s out shooting today. Stay indoors; hide behind something solid

Apparently, they survived. After the expedition, Bryan emailed this shot of Doug holding the 20 gauge over-and-under Beretta in a safe manner.

Bryan Caskey, who so kindly took me out shooting clays a couple of weekends ago (and I had a great time), has Doug Ross out there as I type this.

Doug professes to have never held a gun before. Or a rifle, either, I believe. Today he is armed, with several boxes of ammo.

Pray for their safety. And your own…

I can report that Doug and I are safe and sound. First thing at the range, we went over Jeff Cooper’s Four Rules. Gun safety is the most important thing, and I can report that Doug was an extremely safe shooter at all times, following all four rules at all times.

After the safety briefing, under my tutelage, Doug broke a straight, outgoing clay on his fourth attempt. After that he progressed very nicely, and was occasionally breaking true pairs (two targets thrown simultaneously). By the end of the day, he was close to breaking a clay 50% of the time, and I’m talking about difficult crossing shots, too.

That last little part of Rule 4 is the one many seem not to respect – know what is beyond the target – or at least the one that keeps me alert when in the woods around this time of year.
