Some possible topics, and yeah, they’re mostly related:

  1. Governor issues record number of budget vetoes — Earlier, I wrote a post expressing my dismay that the governor was needlessly antagonizing lawmakers (“needlessly” in the sense of vetoing things she always gets overridden on) with the flag vote coming up. But you know what? I’m so concerned about not rocking the boat myself right now that I took it down, even though it was my only post today. THAT’S how hard I’m cheering for Nikki Haley right now. I didn’t want to create ANY negative waves, Moriarty.
  2. Greece fails to make key debt payment to IMF — You know what? After we get this flag thing done, maybe Nikki could go over and try to inject some fiscal accountability in Athens. There’s a country that could really use a leader who’s handy with budget vetoes. (And no, I’m not trying to get rid of her. She’s my girl now. I’m just saying they could use some of her attitude over there.)
  3. 462 people shot dead by police this year — Just to bring back up a subject that Clementa Pinckney cared a lot about. (If it seems like I can’t talk about anything right now without relating it to the Charleston massacre or issues related to it, well, I guess that’s the case.)
  4. Tillman statue vandalized — Well, again, I’m not for illegal acts that are likely to inflame passions at this delicate time. But you know, it’s Ben Tillman. I’m probably not going to sit up nights worrying about his stupid statue.
  5. KKK plans rally at State House — The KKK rally on July 18 gives lawmakers a nice, clear deadline by which to act on the flag. Present the Klan with a fait accompli
  6. Christie dismisses naysayers, launches long-shot 2016 bid — Don’t know where he stands on the flag, but I’ll let you know when I find out. Meanwhile… do y’all think he has a chance?

Anything else, y’all?

    Re: Haley’s vetoes

We now are in the phase where legislators trade votes to override vetoes to fund their pork projects using other people’s money. $1 million for aquarium renovations, $2.2 million to run a primary (should be paid for by the parties), $2 million for marketing campaigns for SC fruits and vegetables.

When I see those slabs of pork, I can only assume that our crumbling roads are no longer crumbling, our students are all high achievers, and every homeless people has a safe place to sleep at night. Because we wouldn’t pay for an aquarium first, would we?

As long as there are funds to do these things, our taxes are too high.

It would be great if the governor had a 1-2% veto proof red pen for the budget. How can we hold her responsible if nearly all her vetoes are overridden? Or raise the veto override percentage to 80%.

The KKK estimates 100-200 people for the rally—that’s all they got?
    The times, they are a-changin’

      Better response to KKK rally?

      1. Completely ignore them. They’re irrelevant and have no power here anymore.
      2. Non-confrontational unity rally, along the lines of what Charleston did over the Ravenel Bridge. Show them that love is more powerful than hate.

      1. Kathryn Fenner

I think 1,000 ++ people in high 90s to take it down that Saturday evening said enough. How many 1,000s did they estimate on the Ravenel Bridge?

I like # 2. When and where. What location would be most meaningful and what time would be most effective?

Corey Hutchins is on vacation in Greece and posted a great story about how suddenly there’s no cash on the island where he is. All the ATMs are empty. It’s peak tourist season in a place that depends on tourism, and they largely can’t transact business (apparently credit cards are not widely used, as we found to be the case in Germany). http://www.slate.com/articles/business/dispatches/2015/06/a_greek_island_during_the_debt_crisis_what_life_is_like_right_now_on_agistri.html

I’d love to see Glenn McConnell, dressed in his Confederate officer’s uniform retire the flag, and with a drummer boy in tow, walk down Gervais Street to the State Museum and deliver the flag to the Confederate Relic Room. Or, maybe just an Ariail cartoon.

Again the hotheads spoil the water for the lawful, dedicated folks by vandalism – an illegal act. I marched 2 times to remove the flag with thousands of my colleagues. I hate to see irresponsible renegades hinder the work advanced by more effective proponents. It doesn’t help when a state NAACP official praises the woman who committed a useless, grandstanding act by climbing and removing the flag.

RE: the Ariail cartoon, I’ll just assume he’s been reading my blog. 🙂

I don’t support vandalizing the Tillman statue or someone trying to take down the flag single-handedly, either. But meanwhile, last night we saw the seventh black church burned since this flag debate re-started.

    1. Mark Stewart

I was surprised at the muted press over this. I get that one may have (possibly) been lightning, but seven burned without a suspect? This is maybe just a crime, but given that they are not just churches, but specifically black churches, it sounds like a hate crime.

      1. Bryan Caskey

What’s the old Ian Fleming line? “Once is happenstance. Twice is circumstance. Three times is enemy action.”

      1. Phillip

Even worse—the Confederates will say God is on their side, for Him to pick out (out of all the possible churches in the area of the storms) an AME church to burn by lightning strike.

        1. Kathryn Fenner

Yeah, but tornadoes are God’s punishment to the conservatives of Lexington County….

        1. Brad Warthen Post author

The Post headline originally said “A historic black church burns near Charleston, the latest in a spate of fires,” instead of “in Williamsburg County,” but I’m not in Washington and I don’t think of Charleston as being all that near Greeleyville, so I changed it for my SC readers.
