Graham grill

Sorry I’ve had no posts today before now. Busy day. Here are some items:

  1. Graham grills Mulvaney over cuts to ‘soft power’ — And you know whose side I’m on in this one. (Hint: the sane, rational side). Good on you, Lindsey.
  2. Colin Powell: American Leadership — We Can’t Do It for Free — Just to note that rational Republicans agree with Graham on this, whether they speak up or not.
  3. Appeals Court Rules Against Revised Trump Travel Ban — The courts continue to do their vital job. And this was the 4th Circuit — the conservative one, the polar opposite of the 9th.
  4. Trump tells NATO allies to pay up — Which we all say, but of course we must keep NATO going whether they do or not. Maybe this is one of those cases where the Madman Theory will actually work — the one instance in which Trump is useful. I’m not betting on it, though.
  5. Jared Kushner now a focus in Russia investigation — I wish it were Steve Bannon instead, but you take what you can get.
  6. Trump threatens to prosecute over Manchester attack leaks — Here, he’s standing by Theresa May, as he should. But I wonder if he thinks this is a way of achieving his own goals of stopping leaks back home? I’m thinking of the Trump/GOP narrative that the problem isn’t the awful stuff Trump’s doing, but the fact that we keep hearing about it…
  7. Richland deputy saves choking toddler — I thought you could use some good news, and something local…

Missed a big one. The special election in Montana house race took an interesting twist (or perhaps slam) last night when Trumpublican candidate Giantforte body slammed a Guardian reporter for asking about the healthcare bill. This is another illustration that the craven nature of the GOP runs much, much deeper than Trump alone. Further, many on the right are blaming the reporter! An important exception are the Fox News reporters who witnessed the event. They corroborated the audio recording of the incident. For his part Giantforte blamed the “liberal” reporter.

What we’re witnessing in this country is a deterioration of the once honorable party of Lincoln to this diabolical, craven party of Ayn Rand. And it’s leader is Donald J Trump.

Yeah, but I have this ingrained resistance to sticking up for media types. A prof in J-school long ago told me people don’t care, and I internalized that lesson.

With media in as much trouble as it is these days, though, I should overcome that reluctance and ‘splain why people are wrong not to care…

6 of 7 articles being Trump related… yeah you don’t have an obsession problem at all.

That’s what was out there, Claus. That’s what’s out there very freaking day. Look at any major news outlet’s home page. That’s how much disruption and chaos your boy is causing…

So nothing happened yesterday in Columbia or SC except for a school resource officer saving a choking toddler. I guess then regurgitating liberal media news stories is okay then.

        1. Claus2

Nothing on the London bombing? Is that old news now? Or maybe Trump has something to do with it… guess not, otherwise Brad would have an 8th point to discuss.

Claus had a point. Lots of other news out there. Did you know we’re on pace to set a record in traffic deaths. Overseas there wer 2 major terrorist attacks. I already metioned the Montana special election. Lots of climate change news, economic news and there’s even an SC special election.

When Obama was in charge, days, sometimes weeks and months, would pass without his behavior being a news story.

Not true. Remember the terror that gripped the nation when he appeared at a press conference dressed in that (gasp!) tan suit!!! That certainly ranks as a crime against humanity. What made that incident even more troubling was that Obama apparently learned nothing from Al Gore’s earth tones scandal. Disturbing to say the least.

He made himself look ridiculous. And men who wish to be president cannot afford to look ridiculous.

At least, that’s the way it was all through our history up to now.

        Not anymore….

The additional absurdity of the “Earth Tone Al” incident was that this was Al Gore.

I seem to recall that back in the 80s, when he and I were both still in Tennessee, I wrote a column in which I confessed that whenever I ran into him, I was tempted to offer him my horn-rimmed glasses to try on. That’s all that was needed to complete the Clark Kent look.

He was always (as I recall) in a blue suit, white shirt and red tie. With his slicked-down dark hair and less-than-scintillating personality, he came across just like Clark Kent trying to blend into the woodwork lest someone suspect his secret identity — sans specs.

The idea of ol’ Clark trying to make a fashion statement was hilarious…

Another big one, the Seth Rich conspiracy theory nonsense. This could spell the end for Sean Hannity.

    1. JesseS

I was kinda surprised to hear that advertisers were pulling out of his show. Fox can’t seem to catch a break.

First Gretchen Carlson. Ailes is dead after endless sexual harassment suits. Bill O’Reily was canned. Megyn Kelly went off to happier hunting grounds (man, did she know how to time it). “The Five” are now down to The Four.

The only tent poles left are Hannity and …Tucker Carlson? That Tucker Carlson? The kid from Crossfire who wore bow ties? Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Inevitable. When the new wears off MSNBC, CNN, and other cable “news” outlets, the ratings will drop and sooner or later, the pubic will tire of the same drip, drip, drip, drip coming from both sides where fake news is the main item on the menu. Both depend on sycophants and lemmings to follow them and be the source for their news of the day and in all too many instances, what they should think and believe.

There should be mental and physical health warnings for Fox, MSNBC, and CNN viewers just like the warnings on a pack of cigarettes. Expectant mothers should be given special attention. Exposing the little one growing inside mommy may cause severe brain damage and stunted emotional growth.
