How does McAfee keep doing this?

McAfee 2

I have Webroot on my laptop. That’s my antivirus software. I’ve had it since I got the computer. I’ve never installed or tried to use any other security software on this particular platform.

So how come McAfee periodically — as it did this morning, until I stopped it — launches itself and starts scanning my computer?

I’ve never asked it to.

Yeah, I get that computers often come with such software. But I never activated it. So how come?

Seems… intrusive to me…

It is. And I find it irritating. I’ve searched my computer but can’t find a way to delete it.

McAfee is bundled with almost every PC sold…usually with a short trial subscription. Many times, when you set up the computer, you are all but coerced into activating McAfee before you can get to work. If you have Webroot, you should uninstall McAfee anyway. It’s not a good practice to have competing antivirus programs running (they can fight each other).

McAfee will install itself on things like Adobe Reader installs if you don’t uncheck the box when installing it.
